Creating An Organic and Sultry En Suite

CREATING An Organic and

sultry En Suite

When the clients requested a dramatic makeover of their Main Bedroom and Bathroom in the traditional golf course community of Serrano, El Dorado Hills, we went for an update that introduced clean lines, natural colors, and layers of textures that kept with the existing style of the home while providing a contemporary update.

In the bathroom, the existing oval platform bathtub was replaced with a large rectangular undermount bathtub (large enough to accommodate two people!) with a quartzite surround crafted from Montebello quartzite slabs. The same material was also used for the vanity countertops. The quartzite tub platform was extended into the shower to create a shower bench seat with a waterfall front.

To the left of the bathtub, the water closet was opened up to counterbalance the open glass shower. Tall, frosted glass panels replace the drywall and a single swing door replaces the original louvered double doors.

The drop-down ceiling above the shower was removed to create an open feel and allow natural light into the cave-like shower. Large 24” x 24” square crema Marfil marble tiles extend from floor to ceiling throughout the shower and bathtub surround. A frameless clear glass shower panel separates the two areas. The shower is finished with oil-rubbed bronze plumbing fixtures in a living finish that will develop a natural patina over the years. The dark bronze gives a dramatic contrast to the light wall tiles.

The vanities kept their existing footprint, but the original oversized mirrors were removed and scaled down in size, allowing for a taller 8” quartzite backsplash with wall-mount faucets and decorative sconces. Custom walnut vanities with flat panel doors are adorned with oil-rubbed bronze finger pulls, showcasing the warm veining of the black walnut. The vanities are finished with a 3” thick mitered quartzite countertop edge and rectangular undermount sinks.

The opening to the bathroom was closed off for privacy, allowing the headboard wall in the Main Bedroom to be enlarged so the new custom bed could be centered under the coffered ceiling. A custom-designed headboard was upholstered with velvet fabric and crafted with channeled details to break up the seven-foot-tall headboard. The walnut base of the bed ties in with the dark wood dresser and bedside tables and creates a cohesive feel between the bedroom and the bathroom. Alabaster sconces were positioned flanking the bed, casting a soft glow and adding additional detail to the large headboard wall.

The coffered ceiling was painted a dark, coffee brown to accentuate the ceiling detail. Soft, textured fabrics layered in warm browns, golds, and creams adorn the bed and chairs while dark, warm wood tones create a moody ambiance.
